Breeding Neon Tetras Part 1: A Natural Setup with Rainwater
Share
After several years away from breeding neon tetras, I’m finally diving back in — and this time, I’m documenting every step so we can learn together. This new video series on the LOMWILD YouTube channel focuses on the process of breeding neon tetras naturally, from setting up a small breeding tank to raising the fry in a healthy, stable environment.
In Part 1, I walk through the setup I’m using for this first attempt. The tank is a simple 2.5-gallon aquarium lined with coco fiber, a layer of plastic canvas mesh, and a few mini terracotta pots for structure. Instead of tap water, I’m using collected rainwater — a soft, natural option that closely mimics the conditions neon tetras experience in the wild.
My goal is to keep things as natural and accessible as possible, showing that you don’t need expensive gear to create a successful breeding setup. The video highlights each step in detail, from preparing the base to arranging the materials for gentle water flow and egg safety.
Since this is my first time breeding neon tetras again after a long break, I encourage viewers to share their own experiences, methods, and ideas in the comments section. Whether you’re an experienced breeder or just starting out, your input helps make this series a shared learning experience.
Coming Soon – Part 2:
In the next video, I’ll cover how to condition adult tetras for spawning, adjust lighting, and care for the eggs and fry once they appear. Stay tuned and follow along as we see how this natural approach develops.
