How to Culture Vinegar Eels: Traditional & High Density Methods

Traditional Liquid Cultures and High Density Cultures

Vinegar eels, Turbatrix aceti, are tiny free swimming nematodes commonly cultured as live food for newly hatched fish fry. Their small size and tendency to remain swimming throughout the water column make them particularly useful for betta, killifish, rainbowfish, and other very small fry that may not yet be ready for baby brine shrimp. Unlike many microworm type foods, vinegar eels can remain alive in freshwater for an extended period, giving fry more opportunity to find and eat them.

IMPORTANT STARTER CULTURE DISCLAIMER

For best results, start with the same type of vinegar eel culture that you intend to maintain.

If you plan to grow a traditional liquid culture, a traditional liquid vinegar eel starter is preferred.

If you plan to grow a high density oat culture, a starter that is already established using the high density oat method is preferred.

Vinegar eels from a traditional liquid culture can be transferred into an oat based culture, but the first culture may take longer to become established. Once an oat culture is established, using that culture to seed additional high density cultures generally produces faster and more predictable results.

For reliability, LOMWILD recommends maintaining at least two independent vinegar eel cultures so that one remains available if another culture slows down or becomes contaminated.

METHOD 1

TRADITIONAL LIQUID VINEGAR EEL CULTURE

The traditional method is extremely simple, requires very little maintenance, and can remain productive for months. It is an excellent choice when your main goal is maintaining a dependable long term backup supply of vinegar eels. Traditional culture methods commonly use approximately equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and dechlorinated water with a small amount of apple as the food source supporting the culture.

Supplies

You will need:

  1. A clean glass jar, bottle, or food safe container

  2. Apple cider vinegar

  3. Dechlorinated water

  4. A small piece of fresh apple

  5. An established liquid vinegar eel starter culture

  6. Paper towel, breathable fabric, or a ventilated lid

  7. Rubber band if using a paper towel cover

  8. Pipette or eyedropper for harvesting

  9. Filter floss or polyester fiber for the preferred harvesting method

  10. A narrow necked bottle for harvesting

A one liter or similarly sized container works very well, although vinegar eels can be cultured in both smaller and larger containers. Traditional cultures are very forgiving.

STEP 1

Prepare the Container

Wash the culture container thoroughly.

Avoid soap residue, disinfectants, perfumes, cleaning sprays, or other chemicals that may remain inside the container.

Rinse thoroughly before use.

STEP 2

Prepare the Culture Solution

Mix approximately:

50 percent apple cider vinegar

with

50 percent dechlorinated water

For example:

500 mL apple cider vinegar
500 mL dechlorinated water

This approximately 1:1 vinegar to water mixture is widely used for traditional vinegar eel cultures.

Do not fill the container completely to the top. Leave some air space above the culture.

STEP 3

Add the Apple

Wash the apple thoroughly.

Cut a small piece or several thin slices and place them into the culture.

You do not need a large quantity of apple. The apple supports microorganisms and bacteria that become part of the culture's food system. Established traditional methods generally require only a small amount.

Avoid adding large amounts of fruit because excessive organic material can unnecessarily foul the culture.

STEP 4

Add the Starter Culture

Pour your entire LOMWILD traditional vinegar eel starter culture into the prepared vinegar and water mixture.

Gently swirl the container.

Do not vigorously shake it.

STEP 5

Cover the Culture

Cover the opening with a breathable material such as paper towel secured with a rubber band, or use a lid with small ventilation holes.

The purpose is to allow air exchange while reducing contamination from fruit flies and other insects.

STEP 6

Choose a Culture Location

Keep the culture:

At normal room temperature

Out of direct sunlight

Away from excessive heat

Away from household chemicals and sprays

A shelf, cabinet, or fish room location usually works well.

Traditional cultures do not require aquarium lighting, aeration, filtration, or a heater.

STEP 7

Allow the Culture to Establish

Be patient with a new traditional culture.

A newly started culture will commonly require approximately 2 to 4 weeks before the population becomes dense enough for regular harvesting.

When viewed under good lighting, mature vinegar eels appear as extremely small moving threads swimming through the liquid.

A heavily populated culture may also develop a slightly cloudy appearance.

HARVESTING A TRADITIONAL CULTURE

The goal when harvesting is to collect the vinegar eels while minimizing the amount of acidic culture liquid entering the fry aquarium.

Preferred Filter Floss Bottle Method

STEP 1

Pour established vinegar eel culture into a clean narrow necked bottle until the liquid reaches approximately the beginning of the bottle neck.

STEP 2

Insert a small plug of filter floss into the neck.

The bottom portion of the floss should contact the vinegar culture while the upper portion remains above it.

Do not pack it so deeply that it cannot later be removed.

STEP 3

Slowly add dechlorinated freshwater above the filter floss.

The filter floss separates the fresh water from the vinegar culture below.

STEP 4

Allow the bottle to remain undisturbed.

Vinegar eels will migrate through the floss and collect in the freshwater above it.

Significant numbers can usually be collected within approximately 8 to 24 hours.

STEP 5

Use a pipette or eyedropper to remove the freshwater containing the vinegar eels.

Feed this directly to the fry.

STEP 6

Replace the removed freshwater above the floss and allow additional vinegar eels to accumulate.

This harvesting arrangement can often be used repeatedly for several days.

Alternative Coffee Filter Method

You may also pour a portion of the culture through a fine coffee filter.

Allow the vinegar solution to drain through.

Rinse the collected vinegar eels thoroughly with dechlorinated freshwater.

Transfer the rinsed eels into a small cup of aquarium water and feed using a pipette.

Do not pour concentrated vinegar culture directly into a fry aquarium.

MAINTAINING A TRADITIONAL CULTURE

Traditional vinegar eel cultures require remarkably little maintenance.

You normally do not need to continuously add food.

Monitor the culture periodically.

If the culture becomes unusually cloudy, develops large amounts of debris, or begins producing poorly, start a fresh culture.

Depending on conditions, refreshing the culture every few months is a good preventative practice. Aquarium Co Op recommends refreshing when the apple has broken down and the culture becomes substantially cloudy, while experienced killifish and betta breeders commonly restart cultures approximately every 3 to 6 months.

To restart:

  1. Prepare a fresh 50:50 vinegar and dechlorinated water mixture.

  2. Add fresh apple.

  3. Transfer a generous amount of your established culture.

  4. Allow the new culture to mature before retiring the old one.

Whenever possible, keep the original culture running until you have confirmed that the new culture is thriving.

METHOD 2

HIGH DENSITY OAT VINEGAR EEL CULTURE

The high density method cultures vinegar eels on a moist oat based medium rather than keeping them primarily in liquid.

It behaves more like a microworm culture.

This method can produce substantially greater concentrations of vinegar eels and allows them to be harvested directly from the sides of the container rather than separated from a large volume of vinegar. The published porridge culture method has been used specifically to increase production and simplify harvesting.

The tradeoff is that high density cultures require more maintenance and normally do not remain productive as long as traditional liquid cultures.

Supplies

You will need:

  1. A shallow plastic food safe container with lid

  2. Plain oats or plain oatmeal

  3. Apple cider vinegar

  4. Water

  5. High density vinegar eel starter culture

  6. Measuring cup or graduated container

  7. Spoon

  8. Small clean paintbrush, cotton swab, or similar harvesting tool

  9. Pipette and small cup of aquarium water

Do not use flavored oatmeal containing sugar, fruit, artificial sweeteners, spices, or other additives.

STEP 1

Prepare the Vinegar Mixture

For a small starter culture, measure approximately:

25 mL apple cider vinegar

and

25 mL water

The documented porridge culture method begins with approximately equal volumes of vinegar and water.

Larger batches can be prepared using the same general equal part ratio.

STEP 2

Heat the Liquid

Heat the water and vinegar mixture until hot.

The original documented method uses boiled water and reheats the diluted vinegar before adding it to the oats. This helps prepare the initial culture medium.

Exercise normal caution when handling hot liquids.

STEP 3

Prepare the Oats

Place a shallow layer of plain oats in your culture container.

Pour enough of the hot vinegar mixture over the oats to thoroughly moisten them.

You are looking for a texture similar to thick oatmeal or porridge.

The oats should be moist throughout but should not be floating in liquid.

Avoid making the culture excessively deep. A relatively shallow culture provides more surface area for oxygen exchange and harvesting.

STEP 4

Let the Culture Cool Completely

This step is important.

Allow the prepared oat medium to return completely to room temperature before adding your live vinegar eel starter.

Never place your starter culture onto hot oatmeal.

STEP 5

Add the Starter

Spread your LOMWILD high density vinegar eel starter across several areas of the cooled oat surface.

A generous starter usually establishes faster than a very small starter.

STEP 6

Cover the Culture

Place the lid onto the container.

Allow some air exchange rather than creating a completely airtight container.

Small ventilation holes may be used if necessary.

The goal is to maintain humidity while still permitting oxygen exchange and reducing access by flies and other pests.

STEP 7

Allow the Culture to Establish

Place the container at room temperature away from direct sunlight.

A new high density culture generally takes approximately 7 to 10 days to establish under favorable conditions. The first oat culture started from a traditional liquid culture may take somewhat longer. Once an established oat culture is used as the starter for another oat culture, subsequent cultures can establish more readily.

As the population increases, vinegar eels will become concentrated within the medium and along moist surfaces near the culture.

HARVESTING A HIGH DENSITY CULTURE

One of the biggest advantages of this method is simple harvesting.

STEP 1

Wait until large numbers of vinegar eels are visible along the sides of the culture container.

STEP 2

Use a small clean paintbrush, cotton swab, or similar tool to gently collect vinegar eels from the sides of the container.

The documented high density method specifically uses a paintbrush for harvesting.

STEP 3

Rinse the brush into a small cup containing aquarium water or dechlorinated freshwater.

Swirl the brush through the water.

STEP 4

Use a pipette to distribute the vinegar eels into the fry aquarium.

Because very little culture medium is transferred using this method, dilution is easy and considerably less vinegar enters the aquarium compared with scooping directly from a traditional liquid culture.

MAINTAINING A HIGH DENSITY CULTURE

High density cultures produce rapidly but should be treated as shorter term production cultures.

Check the culture regularly.

If the oatmeal begins drying, a very small amount of appropriately diluted vinegar solution can be added to restore moisture.

If production begins slowing, a small amount of fresh prepared oatmeal can sometimes refresh the culture.

Some experienced culturists also use small amounts of nutritional yeast to refresh declining cultures, although this is optional rather than necessary.

The documented porridge method can remain harvestable for approximately 1 to 2 months, after which restarting a fresh culture is generally preferable.

LOMWILD recommends starting the replacement culture before the original culture declines.

RESTARTING A HIGH DENSITY CULTURE

When your existing culture is producing heavily:

  1. Prepare a new container of vinegar moistened oats.

  2. Allow the mixture to cool completely.

  3. Collect a generous amount of vinegar eels from the established high density culture.

  4. Transfer them to the fresh medium.

  5. Maintain both cultures until the new culture is clearly established.

  6. Retire the older culture only after the replacement is producing well.

Using vinegar eels already adapted to the oat method makes establishing subsequent high density cultures easier.

TRADITIONAL VS HIGH DENSITY

Traditional Liquid Culture

Best for long term storage and reliability.

Requires very little maintenance.

Usually takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks to reach strong harvesting density.

Can remain viable for many months.

Harvesting requires separating the vinegar eels from the acidic culture liquid.

Excellent as a permanent backup culture.

High Density Oat Culture

Best for producing large numbers of vinegar eels quickly.

Usually becomes established in approximately 7 to 10 days once properly adapted.

Much easier to harvest.

Requires more frequent maintenance.

Generally needs to be restarted more often.

Excellent for breeders actively feeding multiple groups of fry.

THE LOMWILD RECOMMENDED SETUP

For serious fish breeding, the most dependable system is not choosing one method over the other.

Keep both.

Maintain:

1 traditional liquid mother culture

as your long term backup.

1 second traditional backup culture

in case something happens to the primary culture.

1 or 2 high density cultures

for regular production and feeding.

When a high density culture begins aging, use an established high density culture to start its replacement.

This gives you the long term stability of traditional vinegar cultures while also providing the easy harvesting and greater production potential of the high density method.

FEEDING VINEGAR EELS TO FRY

Harvest only the amount you intend to feed.

Feed small amounts several times throughout the day when practical rather than adding enormous quantities at once.

Because vinegar eels swim throughout the water column and remain alive in freshwater longer than many other nematode fry foods, fry have additional opportunities to capture them.

Vinegar eels are especially useful during the period when fry are too small for larger live foods. They can also be offered alongside other appropriately sized foods as the fry grow. Baby brine shrimp generally offers greater nutritional value once the fry are large enough to consume it, so vinegar eels are best considered an important part of a varied fry feeding program rather than the only food offered throughout development.

CULTURE SUCCESS TIPS

Keep multiple cultures instead of depending on only one.

Label every culture with its start date.

Keep traditional and high density cultures clearly identified.

Use clean equipment when transferring cultures.

Avoid introducing aquarium water, food residue, soap, or chemicals into your mother cultures.

Keep cultures away from pesticides, aerosol sprays, cleaners, and extreme temperatures.

Never discard your last healthy culture when starting a replacement.

Always confirm that a new culture is producing before retiring the previous one.

Most importantly, start with the type of culture you intend to grow. Traditional liquid starters are best suited for traditional cultures, while established high density starters provide the easiest transition into high density oat production.
