If Your Shipping Water Is Slightly Blue

If your fish arrived with water that is tinted slightly blue, there is no cause for concern. The blue color comes from a small amount of methylene blue that I add before shipping.

Methylene blue has long been used in the aquarium hobby to help reduce shipping stress while offering temporary protection against certain fungal and bacterial infections that can occur during transport.

Do not add shipping water to your aquarium. Methylene blue can permanently stain silicone, decorations, clothing, and aquarium equipment. It can also damage or kill many live aquatic plants and may negatively affect the beneficial bacteria that maintain your biological filtration.

Once acclimation is complete, gently net your fish into the aquarium and discard all shipping water.

Acclimation Instructions

If Your Fish Arrived in a Standard Fish Bag

Standard fish bags should be floated in your aquarium for approximately 15 to 20 minutes to gradually equalize the water temperature.

After floating, open the bag and begin a slow drip acclimation using airline tubing. Add aquarium water at approximately 2 to 4 drops per second for 30 to 45 minutes.

Once acclimation is complete, gently net the fish into the aquarium and discard all shipping water.

If Your Fish Arrived in a Breather Bag

Breather bags function differently than traditional fish bags and should never be floated. These bags allow oxygen to pass directly through the sides of the material. Floating them in water blocks this gas exchange and can reduce the oxygen available to your fish.

Instead, carefully open the bag immediately upon arrival and begin a slow drip acclimation using airline tubing at approximately 2 to 4 drops per second for 45 to 60 minutes.

When acclimation is complete, gently net the fish into the aquarium and discard all shipping water.

After Acclimation

Keep the aquarium lights dim for the first several hours to reduce stress. Avoid feeding immediately after introducing your fish. Most fish will begin exploring their new environment once they have had time to rest and adjust to their surroundings.
