LOMWILD Live Scud Starter Cultures contain healthy freshwater amphipods ready to establish and reproduce in your own culture container or planted aquarium.

Scuds are excellent for bettas, killifish, guppies, cichlids, livebearers, rainbowfish, turtles, amphibians, and many other aquatic animals. Their constant movement encourages natural hunting behavior while providing a protein rich diet that helps support growth, coloration, breeding, and overall health.

In addition to being an outstanding live food, scuds are excellent detritivores. They consume decaying plant material, leftover fish food, biofilm, and other organic matter, making them a beneficial part of many planted aquariums and live food systems.

Recommended Culture Setup

A simple plastic tote, small aquarium, or food safe container works well. Add dechlorinated water, leaf litter such as Indian Almond or dried oak leaves, small pieces of driftwood, moss, or other natural materials. Gentle aeration is recommended but not required. Keep the culture between 65°F and 78°F in a location out of direct sunlight.

Feeding

Feed lightly two or three times each week with quality fish flakes, algae wafers, spirulina powder, vegetable scraps such as zucchini or spinach, or leaf litter. Avoid overfeeding and perform occasional water changes as needed to maintain good water quality.

Harvesting

Once your colony begins reproducing, harvest only a portion of the population at a time to allow the culture to remain productive. Under proper conditions, scuds reproduce continuously and can provide an ongoing supply of nutritious live food.
