Culturing Instructions
-
Choose a shallow plastic container with a tight-fitting lid.
-
Prepare a culture medium by cooking plain oatmeal and letting it cool until shiny-wet (not soupy). Other media like instant mashed potatoes or baby cereal also works.
-
Sprinkle a very small amount of active dry yeast over the medium to kickstart bacterial growth (this breaks down the carbs so the worms can feed).
-
Gently add your starter culture to the medium and spread it evenly.
-
Cut a small air hole in the lid and cover it with fine cloth or filter fiber to keep pests out.
-
Store at room temperature in a cool, shaded spot. You should see worm activity in about a week.
-
To harvest, swipe a finger or spoon along the inside edge where worms climb and transfer them to a small container of tank water.
Notes:
-
Walter worms move through the medium and reproduce quickly.
-
Keep backup cultures going in case one crashes.
-
Feeding yeast is helpful when setting up but not needed once the culture is established.
